11年ぶりのカウアイ、15年ぶりのWestin Princeville

カウアイ島に来るのは、11年ぶりだった。
Westin Princeville に泊まるのは、15年ぶりになる。

2008年、最初にカウアイ島を訪れたときは Marriott Waiʻohai に滞在した。
2009年には Kauai Marathon を走り、ひとりで Westin Princeville に泊まった。
その後、夫婦でリフエのマリオットに滞在し──
そして2024年、4度目のカウアイ島。

振り返れば、ずいぶん長い付き合いになった。

今回は「走らない島」

ハワイ諸島への旅で、
「マラソンのない旅」というのは久しぶりだった。

カウアイマラソンは、どうしても南のポイプになってしまう。
悪いわけではない。
でも今回の気分は、どうしてもプリンスヴィルだった。

そしてもうひとつ。
Westin Princeville に、妻と泊まったことがなかった。

あの場所の素晴らしさを、
今回は、ひとりではなく、ふたりで味わいたかった。

何をしに行くわけでもない旅

Princeville には、新しい高級リゾートも増えている。
かつてのセントレジスは、さらに素晴らしいホテルになったと聞く。

Hanalei Bay でサーフィンもしたかった。
Hanalei の町を、当てもなく歩くのもいい。
Waimea Canyon で、大自然に抱かれるのもいい。
道すがらの Kauai Shrimp も、相変わらず絶品だった。

でも、結局のところ、
今回の旅は「何かをしに行く旅」ではなかった。

Sense of Wonder という言葉

レイチェル・カーソンの言葉に、
Sense of Wonder というものがある。

「知ることは、感じることほど重要ではない」

子供のころに持っていた感性。
畏敬の念。
世界に対する、まっさらな驚き。

それを、
2024年5月のカウアイ島で、思い出した。

ネネよりも早起きする朝

毎朝、ネネよりも早く起きて、敷地内を歩いた。

ネネと一緒に芝生を歩き、
断崖から海を眺め、
ただ、朝日が昇るのを見ているだけ。

それだけの時間。

しかし、
これほど贅沢な時間があるだろうかと思った。

動画も、虹の写真も、たくさん撮った。
でも、それは記録というより、
「帰ってから思い出すためのしるし」だった。

やっと、カウアイ島がわかった気がした

「ガーデン・アイランド」と呼ばれながら、
実は、カウアイ島の魅力を
これまでちゃんと掴めていなかったのかもしれない。

でも今回、はっきりとわかった。

ここには、
派手なものは何ひとつない。

その代わり、
シンプルに美しいものが、あふれている。

帰国しても、まだカウアイ島を探している

日本に戻ってきても、
なぜか、自分の中に「カウアイ島」を探している感覚がある。

静かな朝。
風の音。
海の色。

旅が終わっても、
カウアイ島は、まだ終わっていない。

Kauai After Eleven Years, Westin Princeville After Fifteen

It had been eleven years since my last visit to Kauai.

And it had been fifteen years since I last stayed at the Westin Princeville.

My first trip to Kauai was in 2008, when I stayed at Marriott Waiʻohai Beach Club.
In 2009, I ran the Kauai Marathon and stayed alone at the Westin Princeville.
Later, my wife and I stayed at the Marriott in Lihue.

Then, in May 2024, I returned to Kauai for the fourth time.

Looking back, it has become a place that has quietly accompanied my life for many years.

A Trip Without Running

For the first time in a long while, I visited Hawaii without a marathon on my schedule.

The Kauai Marathon always draws me to Poipu in the south of the island.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

But this time, my heart was set on Princeville.

There was another reason as well.

My wife had never stayed at the Westin Princeville.

I wanted to share the beauty of that place with her instead of experiencing it alone.

A Journey Without an Agenda

Princeville has welcomed several new luxury resorts over the years.

The former St. Regis has become an even more spectacular hotel.

I wanted to surf Hanalei Bay.

I wanted to wander through the little town of Hanalei with no destination in mind.

I wanted to stand in awe at Waimea Canyon.

And as always, the Kauai shrimp along the roadside was unforgettable.

Yet, when I look back, this wasn’t really a trip to do anything.

It was simply a trip to be there.

The Sense of Wonder

Rachel Carson wrote about the Sense of Wonder.

“It is not half so important to know as to feel.”

The curiosity we once had as children.

A sense of awe.

The ability to see the world with fresh eyes.

In May 2024, on the island of Kauai, I felt that sense returning.

Mornings Before the Nēnē Wake Up

Every morning, I woke before the nēnē—the Hawaiian goose—and wandered around the resort grounds.

Walking across the lawns with them.

Looking out over the ocean from the cliffs.

Simply watching the sunrise.

That was all.

Yet I couldn’t help thinking:

Could there be a greater luxury than this?

I took many videos and countless photographs of rainbows.

But they were never souvenirs.

They were simply small reminders for the day I would return home.

At Last, I Began to Understand Kauai

Kauai is known as the Garden Isle.

Yet I realized that, until this visit, I had never truly understood its charm.

This time, however, it became clear.

There is nothing flashy here.

Instead, the island overflows with quiet, uncomplicated beauty.

Even After Returning Home

Even after coming back to Japan, I still find myself searching for Kauai.

A quiet morning.

The sound of the wind.

The color of the sea.

The journey may have ended,

but somehow,

Kauai has not.
